With a name based on the ancient Greek word for picture gallery, pinacotheca, this imposing three-part museum in Munich's Art Area encompasses the whole history of European art.

About the museum
The Alte Pinakothek was at its founding in 1836 one of the first public art galleries in the world and a model for all museums. Its royal collections, combined when Bavaria and the Palatinate united, covers the medieval through the rococo periods. The Neue Pinokakothek, founded in 1853, has over 3000 paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries; the building re-opened in 1981.

The Pinakothek der Moderne, designed by German architect Stephan Braunfels, opened in 2002; its four departments are Art, Architecture, Design and Works on Paper.
