MARTa Herford

About the museum
Herford, a small town in northwest Germany, created a sensation in the art world when in 2005 it opened its ambitious new museum MARTa. The striking building complex was designed by Frank Gehry, who used traditional regional red brick for its sinuously curving walls.

The name reflects the three pillars of the center’s mission. “M” stands for the German word for furniture (moebel), which is combined with ART and a little “a” for ambience. MARTa is a laboratory exploring the fluid borders between art, design, architecture, and industry. More than just a museum of contemporary art and design, this dynamic institution is also an educational center and a forum for the performing arts.
